# How to learn Chinese vocabulary in context

A word becomes more useful when you know where it belongs. Pair new vocabulary with a sentence, a sound, and a situation so you have something to draw on beyond an English translation.

## Keep the word and its sentence together

Read the Chinese, check the pinyin and meaning, then place the word in a short sentence. Ask what the sentence is doing: introducing someone, asking a question, or describing a plan.

For example, a greeting is more than a two-character translation. It is something you can recognize and use at the beginning of an exchange.

你好！

Nǐ hǎo!

Hello! Read it, listen, then use it as the opening of a short exchange.

## Listen before you move on

Listen to the supported word or sentence, follow the pinyin, and try saying the phrase yourself. Xue Chinese uses Chinese text-to-speech for this listening support; it does not score your pronunciation.

Use additional listening material and human feedback when you want a broader range of voices or help correcting your own speech.

## Use a dialogue to connect the pieces

Read the whole exchange and identify how one speaker responds to the other. Cover a translation and see whether you can explain the meaning. Return to any sentence pattern that you recognize only after seeing the English.

## Let practice tell you what to revisit

When you miss a quiz question, review the word inside its sentence rather than only memorizing the answer. Follow the next lesson when you are ready, and revisit earlier material as needed.

Xue Chinese brings vocabulary, grammar, dialogues, and quizzes into the same HSK 3.0-aligned path. Try a free unit to see how the study loop fits your routine.
